This is the class blog for COM356, Online Journalism. The course is being taught in the spring, 2018 semester by professor John Beatty. Each student will develop an individual blog to showcase their work and to retain as a portfolio site for this and other classes.

You will work individually and in teams to produce online content building on content related to a topic of your choosing. The topic should be one that showcases your expertise as a blogger and multimedia content producer. Better topics are ones that allow for the presentation of data including maps and infographics.  The content will likely include:

  • still photos
  • audio stories
  • slideshows with music or narration
  • interactive maps
  • data visualizations
  • video
  • Twitter feeds, Instagram and Snapchat stories
  • a capstone project
  • comments on others’ blog posts
  • suggestions that the class develops
  • your review of apps or websites that are of current interest to online or mobile journalists

This will be framed by examination and discussion of the current and projected state of online journalism.

We also may have opportunities to work with La Salle’s Germantown Beat, as well as WHYY’s NewsWorks.
