Audacity final update, tips, samples

OK. Some more tips/reminders:

  • Try the timeshift tool (double arrows) if you want to move some of your narration in between quotes
  • select, go to Effects->Amplify as another way to adjust sound, with preview
  • you can do the export to MP3 without using Quick Mix (in the handouts)
  • remember to split a stereo track, then just delete (use X) rather than convert to mono
  • the spacebar plays and stops in most AV editing software
  • you have already found Record (red button); use Skip to Start/END (Purple arrows) to move around
  • be sure the Project Rate (bottom left corner) is 44100 Hz; you’ll need that setting for Soundslides next week

Here is one sample I had in mind (from an NYU graduate school site). Note the brief post, how the reporter sets up the interviews, and the interesting variety of people. Note there are also problems with levels, transitions.

Here is another (Prof. Culver from Poynter/Wisconsin) that intersperses narration with interview.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

As I am posting these tips today, go ahead and work on the project and finish it up by next class (Monday, 3/22). You need to have a post up then with at least a link to the audio file which you have FTPed to the server. Be sure you  export as MP3.
