Future of journalism

We will discuss where we thing journalism is going, based on the handouts from The Economist, Clay Shirky, John McManus and Beatty.  Take notes as I want a post (the take-home “final exam”) on your views. You can get a copy of my notes here. These readings should be enough, but a good post will suggest further sources. For example, here’s one from Mashable that extends our conversation about the use of social media for journalism.

Here is the post that got Shirky a lot of reaction in the news business. You might want to use that as well. And here is a video of Shirky with specific reference to social media. That one (from is buggy so here’s another one from the same interviews (go to The Rise of Social Media, #4 on the list).

On other fronts, please consult the list of requirements for the final package I posted April 12 (Update, final package). Let me know if you have questions. It needs to be posted along with the final exam/essay (more TK on that next class) by noon, Wednesday, May 5.  This time, of course, I can’t extend the deadline.

For writing that, I put together some tips on writing news-feature stories in general. I have these as a handout, but here they are as well. We’ll go over these today or next day.
