Social media, part 1

This week and next we’ll return to how the face of journalism is changing, in particular due to social media. “Social media” these days probably refers to Facebook and Twitter, although you could news aggregators like diggit, MySpace for the younger crowd, and others we could add later. DO blogs count?

I want you to write a blog post (#10) on social media (define what you think that includes) and how they affect what you might write on your blog, or on any other online content site. Be prepared to discuss this Monday.

For starters here’s a link to an AEJMC thought piece on social media, and one on Twitter from ReadWriteWeb. You also have two handouts (Poynter, and Maureen Dowd). Next class we’ll look at some API presentations on this topic,  and some other links.

Do a twittersearch. What does that tell you about its journalistic role/potential?
