Widgets and plugins, and cleanup

First, plugins technically only are allowed at a site like this one. But you might find the functionality built in to your theme, or there may be widgets to do the same thing. My site has these plugins

  • Viper’s Video
  • All in one SEO Pack
  • Akismet
  • Sociable
  • PollDaddy
  • GWeather
  • All in one AdSense
  • Google Analytics

You should know what these are and see if you can some of that functionality in your theme (e.g. video should embed already; you have WordPress stats instead of Analytics)

You should set up at least three widgets on your blog. We’ll watch this from WordPress TV first. Note that you nned a theme with at least one sidebar.┬áTake a look at the links that are tagged “widgets” in my delicious page (see link at right). You should also start an account there, and get in the habit of adding your links. There is a Firefox Add-on to post directly there.

I suggest you consider:

  • calendar of posts
  • tag cloud
  • Meta (admin if it’s not there)
  • Archives
  • Links (as opposed to BLogroll)
  • Search
  • Pages
  • Categories
  • RSS (may be there already)

Note that we’ll experiment with Pages for static posts of material such as a Google Map that might not fit your blog topic.

Cleanup means that

  • you need to delete the first post that says Hello World!
  • you need to use the Categories widget to classify your posts
  • add tags to your posts
  • be sure that they have a title showing for each post
  • crop, resize and center photos (we will show the first two in Photoshop with these: image1; image2; to center, try adding <div align=”center”> ..picture is here… </div> to your HTML.
  • add an HTML title (tool tip) a title to your photo and a Title in the post, if your theme allows that
Share and Enjoy:
  • Print
  • Digg
  • Facebook
  • Mixx
  • Google Bookmarks
  • Blogplay
  • Technorati
